Remove Objects in Photoshop with the Remove Tool

In this tutorial, you’ll remove unwanted objects from a photo using Photoshop’s Remove Tool. You’ll work non-destructively on a new layer, configure key options for best results, and learn fast techniques for complex shapes and straight objects. Step-by-step instructions

1

Create a non-destructive layer

  • Click the New Layer icon in the Layers panel to add a blank layer above your photo.

  • Optionally rename it; this layer will hold all removals so your original stays intact.

2

Choose and configure the Remove Tool

  • In the Toolbar, long-press the Spot Healing Brush Tool and select Remove Tool.

  • In the Options bar, enable Sample All Layers so the tool works on your blank layer.

  • Keep Remove after each stroke on for now.

  • Set Mode → Auto (May use generative AI) for optimal results on larger or complex areas.

3

Remove the first object (single cone)

  • Resize the brush with the bracket keys: [ smaller, ] larger (to the right of P on US keyboards).

  • Paint over the cone and release to apply the change.

  • Toggle the blank layer’s Eye icon to compare before/after.

4

Batch paint multiple objects

  • In the Options bar, uncheck Remove after each stroke to delay processing.

  • Paint over all remaining cones in separate strokes.

  • If you overpaint, hold Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) to temporarily subtract and refine strokes.

  • Press Enter (Windows) / Return (Mac) or click the checkmark to apply all removals.

5

Loop around complex shapes (trash can)

  • With Remove Tool active, paint a loop around the trash can; the loop auto-closes and fills if start and end are near.

  • Click the Gear icon in the Options bar to adjust Overlay Color and Opacity if the overlay is hard to see.

  • Press Enter/Return to run the removal.

6

Draw straight removals (pole)

  • Make the brush tip wider than the pole.

  • Click once at the bottom of the pole, then Shift-click at the top to create a straight stroke.

  • Ensure Remove after each stroke is unchecked, then press Enter/Return to apply.

7

Review and compare

  • Toggle the blank layer’s visibility to see the before/after.

  • Repeat any Remove Tool passes to refine edges or leftover artifacts.
