Use Generative Fill (and Generative Expand) in Photoshop 2024

Photoshop 2024 introduces Generative Fill and Generative Expand to seamlessly remove distractions, widen a scene, or add new objects with text prompts. This walkthrough gets you started with both features in minutes.

Open your photo in Photoshop 2024

  • Install/update to Photoshop 2024

  • File → Open to load your image

Expand the canvas with Generative Expand

  • Select the Crop Tool

  • In Ratio, choose 2×3 (or your preferred aspect)

  • Press X to swap to landscape/portrait if needed

  • Drag the crop handles outward to add space

  • Click Generative Expand, leave the prompt empty, then click Generate

  • Review the three Variations in the Properties panel and pick one

Remove distractions with Generative Fill (no prompt)

  • Select the Lasso Tool (L) or Magnetic Lasso Tool

  • Draw a loose selection around unwanted objects/people

  • Click Generative Fill (Contextual Task Bar), leave the prompt empty, then click Generate

  • Repeat on other areas until clean

Add new elements with prompts

  • Make a loose selection where you want the object

  • Click Generative Fill, type a prompt (e.g., “campfire”, “flock of birds”, “small boat”, “overhanging palm trees”)

  • Click Generate and choose a Variation; click Generate again for more options if needed

Refine and finalize

  • Toggle among generated Variations in the Properties panel

  • Combine multiple Generative Fill passes to balance the composition

  • Save your result (File → Save As)
