Content-Aware Fill can convincingly remove people and objects by analyzing surrounding pixels. You’ll make a selection, tune the fill settings, and output the result to a new layer so you can compare and refine non-destructively.

Step-by-step instructions

Open and prep your image

  • Open your image (File → Open or drag-and-drop into Photoshop).

  • Press Ctrl+0 (Cmd+0 on Mac) to Fit on Screen.

Select the object to remove

  • Choose the Lasso Tool (L).

  • Draw a loose selection around the object you want to remove.

Launch the Content-Aware Fill workspace

  • Go to Edit → Content-Aware Fill…

  • Wait for the preview to render.

Adjust fill settings for best results

  • In Color Adaptation, choose High or Very High to better match tones.

  • Enable Rotation Adaptation, Scale, or Mirror as needed based on your scene.

  • Review the live preview and refine as necessary.

Choose output and apply

  • Under Output To, select New Layer for non-destructive editing.

  • Click OK to apply the fill.

  • Toggle the new layer’s visibility to compare before/after.
