Resize Any Layer in Photoshop with Free Transform

Photoshop’s Free Transform lets you resize any selected layer, including shapes and images. You’ll learn how to enter transform mode, scale with or without preserving aspect ratio, and apply changes. You’ll also see how to unlock and resize a Background layer.

Step-by-step instructions

Select the layer to resize

  • Press V to choose the Move Tool.

  • In the Layers panel, click the layer you want to resize.

Enter Free Transform

  • Go to Edit → Free Transform.

  • Or press Ctrl/Command + T.

Scale and keep proportions when needed

  • Drag corner or edge handles to resize the layer.

  • Hold Shift while dragging to maintain the aspect ratio.

  • Press Enter/Return or click the checkmark to apply the transform.

Resize image layers proportionally

  • Select the image layer you want to scale.

  • Press Ctrl/Command + T, then hold Shift and drag a corner to scale proportionally.

  • Press V to reposition if needed, then press Enter/Return to confirm.

Resize a locked Background layer

  • Double-click the Background layer and click OK to unlock it.

  • Press Ctrl/Command + T and scale as needed (hold Shift to keep proportions).

  • Press Enter/Return to apply.
