Replace Any Color in Photoshop with Hue/Saturation

This fast technique uses a Hue/Saturation adjustment to target specific colors without manual selections. You’ll sample the color directly, widen the range so all of the target area is included, and then shift hue and saturation to your desired color. You can also convert the area to perfect black or white with Lightness.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer

  • Go to Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Hue/Saturation… and click OK.

  • In the Properties panel, click the on-image Hand Tool.

2

Sample the color to change

  • Click directly on the color in the image (e.g., the dress) to target it.

  • Temporarily drag Hue and Saturation to the right to visualize what’s being affected.

3

Expand and refine the color range

  • Adjust the color range sliders at the bottom of the Properties panel to include all of the target color and smooth transitions.

  • Ensure nearby tones (like skin) aren’t affected; sample again if needed to refine.

4

Set the new color

  • Reset Hue and Saturation back to 0.

  • Drag Hue to choose the new color and adjust Saturation to taste.

  • If any areas should be excluded, paint black on the adjustment layer’s mask to hide the effect there.

5

Optional: Make it black or white

  • For black/gray, set Saturation to 0 and lower Lightness toward −100 for pure black.

  • For white, set Saturation to 0 and raise Lightness toward +100.
