Move Layers in Photoshop: Select, Drag, and Nudge Accurately
Moving the right content starts with selecting the right layer. This tutorial shows you how to single-click select layers, temporarily access the Move tool without switching tools, and nudge layers precisely with the keyboard. You’ll also learn quick ways to undo and avoid common selection mistakes.

Step-by-step instructions
Select the correct layer
In the Layers panel, find the target by its layer name or thumbnail and click once on its bar.
Confirm the active layer by checking it’s highlighted and by reading the layer name in the document tab.
Avoid double-clicking: double-clicking blank areas opens Layer Style; double-clicking the name starts renaming.
Move a layer with the Move tool temporarily
Keep your current tool active.
Hold Cmd (Mac) / Ctrl (Win) to temporarily switch to the Move tool.
Click-drag anywhere on the canvas to move the selected layer; release Cmd/Ctrl to return to your previous tool.
Nudge the layer precisely
Hold Cmd/Ctrl to access the Move tool temporarily.
Tap the Arrow keys to nudge by 1-px increments.
Hold Shift + Cmd/Ctrl and tap Arrow keys to nudge in larger increments.
Recover quickly from mistakes
Use Edit → Undo (Cmd/Ctrl+Z) to revert the last move.
Go to Window → History to open the History panel, then click a prior state to step back or forward.
Note: If you step back and then perform a new action, subsequent history states are replaced.
