Step-by-step instructions

1

Select layers to merge

  • Open the Layers panel.

  • Ctrl-click (Windows) or Command-click (Mac) to select individual layers.

  • Shift-click to select a continuous range of layers.

2

Use destructive merge options (with caution)

  • Right-click the selection and choose Merge Layers to combine the selected layers into one.

  • Hide layers you don’t want merged by clicking their eye icons, then right-click and choose Merge Visible to merge only visible layers.

  • To finalize everything, go to Layer → Flatten Image (merges visible layers and discards hidden ones).

3

Undo an accidental merge with History (before closing)

  • Open Window → History.

  • Click the step just before the merge action to revert.

  • Note: Once you save and close the file, destructive merges cannot be undone.

4

Combine layers non-destructively with a Smart Object

  • Select the layers you want to act as a single unit.

  • Right-click and choose Convert to Smart Object.

  • Double-click the Smart Object thumbnail to open and edit the original layers at any time; save and close the Smart Object window to update.
