Make Text Glow in Photoshop

You’ll design bold glowing text by starting on a black background, setting white type, and using Outer Glow for the bloom and Inner Glow for color inside the letters. Adjust a few key settings to control glow intensity and color.

Create a new document with a dark background

  • Go to File → New and choose your desired size.

  • Set Background to Black (or fill the background layer with black using Edit → Fill → Black).

  • Click Create.

Add white text

  • Select the Horizontal Type Tool (T).

  • Click on the canvas and type your text (e.g., “Glow”).

  • Press Ctrl+A inside the text box and set the color to White.

  • Set Size to about 300 pt and center the text with the Move Tool (V).

Add Outer Glow for the main bloom

  • In the Layers panel, double-click the text layer to open Layer Style.

  • Enable Outer Glow.

  • Set Opacity to 100%.

  • Increase Spread to intensify the edge and Size to expand the glow.

  • Under Quality, set Range to 100%.

  • Click the color swatch and choose your glow color (e.g., blue), then click OK.

Add Inner Glow for colored fill

  • In the same Layer Style dialog, enable Inner Glow.

  • Set Blend Mode to Normal.

  • Click the color swatch, choose the same glow color (e.g., blue), and click OK.

  • Increase Size to tint more of the letter interior.

  • Under Quality, set Range to 100%, then click OK to apply.
