Build a reusable grid pattern in Photoshop

This quick method lets you design a crisp grid once and reuse it across any document. You’ll draw a simple tile, define it as a pattern, and then apply it at flexible scales using a Pattern Fill layer.

Step-by-step instructions

Create the grid tile document

  • Go to File → New…

  • Set Units to Inches, Width: 10 in, Height: 10 in, Resolution: 300 ppi

  • Set Background Contents: Transparent and click Create

Add center guides

  • Go to View → Rulers (or press Ctrl+R/Cmd+R)

  • Drag a vertical guide from the left ruler to the exact center (5 in)

  • Drag a horizontal guide from the top ruler to the exact center (5 in)

Draw the grid lines

  • Select the Line Tool (U); set Fill color: Black and Weight to your desired line thickness

  • Hold Shift and drag a vertical line along the center vertical guide

  • Hold Shift and drag a horizontal line along the center horizontal guide

Define the grid as a pattern

  • Go to Edit → Define Pattern…

  • Name the pattern (e.g., “Center Cross Grid”) and click OK

Apply the grid pattern to any document

  • Create or open a new document of any size

  • Go to Layer → New Fill Layer → Pattern… → OK

  • Open the Pattern picker and select your new grid pattern

  • Enable Snap to Origin, then adjust Scale to fit your needs; click OK
