Invert a Photo in Photoshop (2024)
The quickest, reversible way to invert colors in Photoshop is with an Invert adjustment layer. This keeps your original image intact and lets you fine-tune the effect with opacity and masking. Follow these steps to apply and customize the inversion.
Step-by-step instructions
Open your photo
Go to File → Open...
Select your image and click Open.
Add an Invert adjustment layer
Go to Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Invert...
Click OK in the New Layer dialog; the image will invert immediately.
Control intensity and affected areas
Lower the adjustment layer’s Opacity in the Layers panel to reduce the effect.
Click the adjustment layer’s mask thumbnail and paint with black to hide or white to reveal the inversion in specific areas.
Edit or remove later
Toggle the layer’s visibility (eye icon) to compare before/after.
Delete the adjustment layer to revert without altering the original image.
