Use Generative Expand to Extend Images in Photoshop (Beta)

Generative Expand simplifies extending an image beyond its original bounds. You’ll use the Crop Tool to enlarge the canvas, optionally add a text prompt, and generate realistic content to fill the new space.

Step-by-step instructions

Open your image in Photoshop (beta)

  • Install or update Photoshop (beta) from Creative Cloud.

  • Open the image you want to extend.

Set the new size with the Crop Tool

  • Select the Crop Tool (C).

  • Drag the crop handles outward to your desired composition.

  • Optionally choose an aspect ratio preset from the task bar, then tweak the size.

Generate the expanded content

  • Click the Generative Expand button in the task bar or Options bar.

  • Optionally enter a prompt describing what to add; leave empty to match the existing scene.

  • Click Generate and wait for Photoshop to fill the extended canvas. Review and choose from variations if available.

Refine and repeat if needed

  • Adjust the crop again to fine‑tune framing.

  • Click Generate again to produce a new expansion until you’re satisfied.

  • Save your result (File → Save or File → Export → Export As).
