Flip an Image in Photoshop (Canvas, Layer, and Mirror Effect)

Photoshop lets you flip an entire canvas for quick left-right or top-bottom reversals, or flip individual layers for more control. You can also create a mirror image effect by masking a flipped layer. Follow these steps to apply each method.

Step-by-step instructions

Open your image

  • Drag and drop your image into Photoshop or go to File → Open and select your file.

  • Open the Layers panel: Window → Layers.

Flip the entire canvas

  • Go to Image → Image Rotation → Flip Canvas Horizontal to flip left-to-right.

  • Or go to Image → Image Rotation → Flip Canvas Vertical to flip top-to-bottom.

  • Press Ctrl+Z (Windows) or Command+Z (Mac) to undo if needed.

Flip a single layer

  • Duplicate the layer: Right-click the layer → Duplicate Layer (or press Ctrl+J / Command+J).

  • Select the layer you want to flip in the Layers panel.

  • Go to Edit → Transform → Flip Horizontal (or Flip Vertical).

Create a mirror effect with a mask

  • Make a selection of the side you want to reveal (e.g., select the left part using a marquee or lasso tool).

  • With the flipped layer selected, click Add Layer Mask at the bottom of the Layers panel.

  • Refine the mask edges as needed to blend the mirrored side.
