Rescue an Out‑of‑Focus Photo in Photoshop
If critical focus is missed, you can still create a compelling image. This workflow builds perceived detail with an Emboss layer, smooths forms with Oil Paint, and adds color grading and vignette-like focus to elevate the result.

Step-by-step instructions
Clean up the background
Use the Spot Healing Brush to remove distracting lines and texture.
Switch to the Patch Tool (Content-Aware) to select problem areas and drag to clean blue sky/background.
Use Clone Stamp for any stubborn spots.
Remove wires or lines by clicking start, then Shift-click end with a small Spot Healing Brush.
Add edge detail with Emboss
Duplicate the layer (right-click → Duplicate Layer).
Go to Filter → Stylize → Emboss. Use a small Height; adjust Amount to reveal edges; click OK.
Change the embossed layer’s Blend Mode to Overlay.
Choose Image → Adjustments → Levels and darken to push contrast in the embossed detail; lower layer Opacity if needed.
Create a smoothed paint look
Stamp visible to a new layer: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E (Cmd+Opt+Shift+E).
Go to Filter → Oil Paint.
Use higher Stylization and Cleanliness; keep Bristle Detail low; set Shine to 0; adjust to taste and click OK.
Recolor with Hue/Saturation
Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Hue/Saturation.
Target Blues and Cyans and shift toward aqua; increase Master Saturation slightly.
Warm with a Photo Filter
Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Photo Filter.
Choose a Warming Filter (or Sepia) and adjust Density to taste.
Optionally paint on the mask to reduce warming on the subject’s outfit.
Focus attention with Curves (darken edges)
Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Curves; pull midtones down to darken.
Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool and draw an oval over the subject.
Go to Select → Modify → Feather (≈30 px).
On the Curves mask, fill the selection with black (Alt+Backspace / Option+Delete) to keep the center brighter.
Lighten the subject
Duplicate the Curves layer; select its mask and press Ctrl+I (Cmd+I) to invert.
Lift the curve to brighten the subject area.
Optionally paint on the mask with black/white to refine where the lightening applies.
