Fix Blurry Photos in Photoshop with Smart Sharpen (Motion Blur)

When camera shake causes directional blur, Photoshop can counteract it. You’ll measure the blur’s angle and approximate length, convert the layer to a Smart Object, and use Smart Sharpen with Remove: Motion Blur to reverse the streaking.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Measure blur angle and length with the Ruler Tool

  • Zoom into a strong edge that shows streaking.

  • Select the Ruler Tool (nested under the Eyedropper in the toolbar).

  • Drag along the blur direction to draw a line that matches the streak.

  • Note the Angle (e.g., about −130°) and the Distance/length (e.g., ~15 px).

2

Prepare a non-destructive layer

  • Duplicate the photo layer (Ctrl+J / Cmd+J).

  • Right-click the duplicate and choose Convert to Smart Object.

3

Apply Smart Sharpen for motion blur

  • Go to Filter → Sharpen → Smart Sharpen.

  • Set Remove to Motion Blur.

  • Enter the measured Angle (e.g., −130°).

  • Set Radius roughly to the measured length (start near 15) and raise Amount gradually (e.g., ~330%). Adjust to taste; click OK.

4

Refine if needed

  • Because it’s a Smart Filter, double-click Smart Sharpen to tweak settings anytime.

  • Avoid over-sharpening—zoom to 100% and compare before/after for artifacts.
