Change a Shape’s Fill Color in Photoshop

If you’re working with shape layers, you can change their color in seconds. This guide shows two beginner-friendly ways to update a shape’s fill using either the layer controls or the Properties panel.

Step-by-step instructions

Select the shape layer

  • Choose the Move Tool (V).

  • In the Layers panel, click the vector shape layer you want to recolor.

Change color from the Layers panel

  • In Layers, double-click the shape layer’s thumbnail (the color swatch/shape icon).

  • Pick a new color in the Color Picker and click OK.

Change color from the Properties panel

  • Go to Window → Properties (ensure it’s visible).

  • With the shape layer selected, click the Fill swatch in Properties.

  • Choose a new color (or gradient/pattern, if desired).

Optional: Adjust stroke

  • In Properties, set Stroke color and width if your shape needs an outline.

  • Set Stroke to None if you want only a fill.
