How to Extend a Background in Photoshop
When you need extra space on a photo’s sides or top/bottom, Photoshop can grow your background convincingly. You’ll extend the canvas, fill or stretch uniform areas with Content‑Aware tools, and optionally use an extension panel to automate the process. Finish by retouching seams for a clean look.

Step-by-step instructions
Unlock the layer and extend the canvas
Open your image and double‑click the Background layer to unlock it (rename if prompted).
Select the Crop Tool (C); drag the crop handles outward in the direction(s) you want to extend.
Enable Content‑Aware (in the Options bar) if available, then press Enter/Return to auto‑fill the added area.
Stretch simple backdrops with Content‑Aware Scale (alternative)
If the Content‑Aware Crop didn’t fill cleanly, undo the crop fill but keep the larger canvas.
Choose Edit → Content‑Aware Scale.
Enable Protect Skin Tones (person icon) in the Options bar to avoid distorting people.
Drag the transform handle outward to stretch only the background into the extended space → Enter/Return.
Fill empty borders with Content‑Aware Fill (selection-based)
Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to select an empty edge area.
Go to Edit → Content‑Aware Fill; review the preview and adjust the Sampling Area if necessary.
Set Output To → New Layer → OK. Repeat for other sides.
Use the Image Extend extension (optional)
Go to Window → Extensions → Image Extend (or Plugins → Image Extend, depending on your version).
Choose which side(s) to extend and set the number of pixels.
Select Content‑Aware as the method and click Extend.
Retouch and align for a seamless finish
Use the Healing Brush/Clone Stamp to remove repeating patterns or artifacts at joins.
Straighten or nudge edges/lines with Edit → Free Transform or Warp.
Zoom out and review for uniform tone and texture; make minor adjustments as needed.
