Step-by-step instructions

Open your image and select the Crop tool

  • Go to File → Open and select your image.

  • Select the Crop Tool (C) from the toolbar.

Extend the canvas to reframe your subject

  • Drag a crop handle outward on the side you want to extend (e.g., right) until your subject is centered.

  • Check that the newly added area shows as empty/black space outside the original image.

Generate the extended background

  • In the contextual bar/options, click Generative Expand.

  • Optionally type a brief prompt, or leave it blank for an automatic match.

  • Click Generate and wait while Photoshop synthesizes the missing background.

Review variations and commit the result

  • In the Properties panel, click through the generated variations to preview different fills.

  • Select your preferred variation.

  • Press Enter/Return or click the checkmark to commit the crop.

Save your expanded image

  • Go to File → Save As.

  • Choose a format (e.g., JPEG, PNG, PSD), name the file, and click Save.
