Edit Text in Photoshop (2024): Fonts, Size, Color, and Layer Styles
This quick guide shows how to edit text in Photoshop using the Type Tool and the Options bar. You’ll also learn to open the Layer Style dialog to add texture, strokes, and shadows for a polished result.

Step-by-step instructions
Select the text layer and Type Tool
In the Layers panel, click the text layer to make it active.
Press T to select the Horizontal Type Tool, then click inside the text to place the cursor.
Drag over characters to highlight the portion you want to edit.
Change font, size, style, and color
Use the Options bar to choose a Font Family from the dropdown.
Set the Font Size to the desired value.
Pick a Font Style (e.g., Regular, Bold, Italic) if available for that font.
Click the color swatch in the Options bar to choose a new text color and click OK.
Reposition the text
Press V to select the Move Tool.
Click and drag the text to position it where you want on the canvas.
Click elsewhere or press Ctrl+Enter to commit the text changes.
Open Layer Styles for advanced effects
Double‑click the empty area on the right side of the text layer in the Layers panel to open Layer Style.
Enable Pattern Overlay to add texture to the text, and choose a pattern.
Check Stroke, then double‑click Stroke to customize Size, Position (Inside/Outside), and Color.
Enable Drop Shadow and adjust Distance, Spread, and Size for the desired look.
Click OK to apply and save the style settings.
Save your editable file
Go to File → Save As and save a .PSD to keep text and effects editable.
Export a copy (File → Export → Export As) if you need a flattened image for sharing.
