Create a Fur Text Effect with an Action in Photoshop
This tutorial walks you through setting up assets, recording an action, and applying a fur brush stroke along a text path to generate plush, 3D fur. You’ll then add layered styles, convert to a smart object, and clip a Gradient Map for brighter, more realistic fur—ready to reuse with a single action click.

Step-by-step instructions
Prepare assets and background
Install the provided font and open your background image (File → Open…).
Install brushes/patterns by dragging .abr/.pat files into Photoshop or via Edit → Presets → Import Presets.
Create and center the base text
Select the Type Tool (T) and type your word (e.g., FUR) using the installed font.
Press Cmd/Ctrl+A, switch to the Move Tool (V), and click Align Horizontal Centers and Align Vertical Centers to center the text.
Start recording an action
Go to Window → Actions.
Click Create New Set, then Create New Action, and click Record to begin capturing steps.
Stroke a work path with the fur brush
Rename the text layer to Base Text 1.
Brush Tool (B): select the imported fur brush and match the provided settings.
Create a new empty layer above (name it Fur 1).
Right-click Base Text 1 → Create Work Path.
Select layer Fur 1, open Window → Paths, right-click Work Path → Stroke Path…; Tool: Brush; uncheck Simulate Pressure; click OK.
Delete the Work Path in the Paths panel.
Merge and apply layer styles for depth
Select layers Fur 1 and Base Text 1 and press Cmd/Ctrl+E to merge.
Double-click the merged layer to open Layer Style and add: Bevel & Emboss, Contour, Inner Glow, Color Overlay, Pattern Overlay (choose the provided pattern), and multiple Drop Shadows (+ icon).
Right-click the styled layer → Convert to Smart Object.
Brighten with a clipped Gradient Map
Open Window → Adjustments and add a Gradient Map above the smart object.
Rename it Gradient Color; right-click → Create Clipping Mask.
Edit the gradient to map dark-to-light tones so the fur appears brighter/whiter as desired.
Stop recording and reuse the action
In the Actions panel, click Stop to finish recording.
Test your action on a new text layer to generate the fur effect with one click.
