Create a Seamless Pattern in Photoshop with Pattern Preview

Photoshop’s Pattern Preview makes building seamless, balanced block repeats fast and visual. In this tutorial, you’ll enable Pattern Preview, arrange and duplicate smart object motifs, handle common gotchas, and then save and apply your pattern. Step-by-step instructions

1

Enable Pattern Preview

  • Go to View → Pattern Preview.

  • Click OK if prompted that Pattern Preview works best with Smart Objects.

  • Zoom out to see the blue tile boundary and live repeats around it.

2

Arrange and duplicate motifs

  • In the Layers panel, select a motif (use Smart Objects for best results).

  • Alt/Option-drag to duplicate elements into the tile.

  • Use Edit → Transform → Rotate (or the bounding box) to orient elements.

  • Drag to balance the layout while watching the live repeat (Pattern Preview supports standard block repeats only).

3

Align perfectly to the canvas (workaround)

  • Turn off View → Pattern Preview.

  • Select the layer to align, set Align To: Canvas, then use the Move Tool’s alignment icons or Layer → Align → Horizontal Centers and Vertical Centers.

  • Turn Pattern Preview back on and continue arranging.

4

Avoid layer mask glitches in Pattern Preview

  • Avoid duplicating or moving layers that have layer masks while Pattern Preview is on.

  • If a masked element disappears or behaves erratically, temporarily turn off Pattern Preview or remove/disable the mask before duplicating.

5

Define and save the pattern

  • Choose Edit → Define Pattern, name it (e.g., “Bird pattern”), and click OK.

  • Alternatively, open Window → Patterns, click the + icon, name it, and save to the Patterns panel.

6

Apply the pattern to a mockup with a Pattern Fill

  • Open your target Smart Object (e.g., a card mockup) and choose Layer → New Fill Layer → Pattern.

  • In the Pattern Fill dialog, pick your new pattern, adjust Scale to fit, and tweak Angle to match the artwork’s tilt.

  • Drag to position as needed and click OK, then save the Smart Object to update the mockup.

7

Export the repeat tile and save your source

  • Go to File → Export → Export As.

  • Choose JPEG or PNG, set Quality to High, and click Export to save the tile inside the blue boundary.

  • Save your layered working file as a PSD for future edits.
