Colorize a Black-and-White Photo in Photoshop (CMYK + Solid Color Method)
This workflow brings vintage black-and-white photos to life with natural-looking color. You’ll clean the scan, set a strong monochrome base, switch to CMYK for better tonal interaction, then paint colors with Solid Color adjustments and masks. Finish with global Hue/Saturation and Color Balance to unify the image.

Step-by-step instructions
Clean the scan non-destructively
Right-click the photo layer → Convert to Smart Object.
Go to Filter → Noise → Dust & Scratches.
Set Radius to 1–2 px and Threshold to ~30–40 to remove speckles without blurring detail, then click OK.
Neutralize and set contrast
Add Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Black & White to remove any color/sepia cast.
Add Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Levels.
Darken shadows by dragging the left (black) input slider right until contrast looks solid; keep highlights balanced.
Switch to CMYK for more natural colorization
Go to Image → Mode → CMYK Color.
Click Merge when prompted so adjustments carry over.
Continue working in CMYK so tones show through colored areas more realistically.
Brush in base colors with Solid Color adjustments
Add Layer → New Fill Layer → Solid Color; pick a hue for the area you’re targeting.
Change the layer’s blending mode to Soft Light (natural) or Color (more vibrant).
Click the layer mask and hide the fill (Ctrl/Cmd+I) or Edit → Fill → Black.
Paint with a soft white brush over the areas to reveal color; adjust layer Opacity to taste.
Click the color swatch on the Solid Color layer anytime to live-tweak the hue.
Add subtle facial variation
Create additional Solid Color layers for subtle tints: light pink (eyes/cheeks), yellow (forehead), blue (beard area).
Set Opacity below 20% for realism and paint into their masks where needed.
Use selections if painting with a mouse (optional)
Select the Pen Tool (P) and trace an area (e.g., clothing).
Right-click → Make Selection; add Feather = 1 px for softer edges.
Fill the relevant Solid Color mask with white to instantly apply color inside the selection.
Apply global finishing tweaks
Add Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Hue/Saturation at the top and raise Saturation slightly to boost vibrancy.
Add Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Color Balance and fine-tune Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights—balance between Yellows/Blues to warm/cool the image.
