Clear Recent Files and Manage the Home Screen in Photoshop

If your Photoshop Home screen is cluttered with recent files, you can clear them in seconds. This guide also shows how to hide or restore the Home screen and quickly repopulate the Recent list if needed.

Open Photoshop and go to the Home screen

  • Launch Photoshop

  • If a document is open, close it to view the Home screen

Clear the Recent file list

  • Go to File → Open Recent → Clear Recent File List

  • Return to Home to confirm the thumbnails are gone

Hide or show the Home screen (optional)

  • Open Preferences: macOS: Photoshop → Settings/Preferences → General; Windows: Edit → Preferences → General

  • Toggle Auto Show the Home Screen on/off

  • Click OK to apply

Repopulate the Recent list (optional)

  • Open multiple images to add them to your recent files

  • Go to File → Close All to close them quickly

  • Check File → Open Recent to see the updated list (up to 100 items)
