Change CMYK to RGB in Photoshop (preserve colors and layers)
In this tutorial, you’ll convert a CMYK Photoshop file to RGB without losing color fidelity or editable layers. You’ll use two approaches: Image → Mode for a quick switch (with Smart Objects to protect layers) and Edit → Convert to Profile for precise color-managed conversion.

Step-by-step instructions
Prepare your document
Open your CMYK file in Photoshop.
Go to Image → Mode and confirm it’s set to CMYK Color.
Save a copy (File → Save As) so you can revert if needed.
Optional: Preserve layers by converting to a Smart Object
In the Layers panel, select all layers (click the top layer, then Shift-click the bottom layer).
Right-click the selection → Convert to Smart Object (or Layer → Smart Objects → Convert to Smart Object).
Verify the layers are wrapped into a single Smart Object layer.
Convert using Image → Mode (quick method)
Go to Image → Mode → RGB Color.
If prompted, choose Don’t Flatten and Don’t Rasterize to keep the Smart Object/layers intact.
Confirm the document is now in RGB (check Image → Mode → RGB Color is checked).
Alternative: Convert using Edit → Convert to Profile (color-managed method)
Go to Edit → Convert to Profile…
Under Destination Space, set Profile to an RGB profile (e.g., sRGB IEC61966-2.1).
Leave other options at their defaults (or adjust as required), then click OK.
Verify the document is in RGB (check Image → Mode → RGB Color).
Continue editing layers (if you used a Smart Object)
Double-click the Smart Object thumbnail to open it in a separate window.
Edit the original layers as needed, then File → Save and close the Smart Object window.
Your RGB document updates with all edits preserved.
