Change Any Color in Photoshop Using Hue/Saturation

This workflow uses a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to target and remap a specific color. You’ll use the on-image Hand tool to sample the color, expand the range for clean coverage, and then choose any new hue you like. It’s fast, flexible, and completely non-destructive.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer

  • Go to Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Hue/Saturation.

  • In the Properties panel, click the Hand tool icon.

2

Target the color to change

  • Click directly on the object (e.g., a dress) whose color you want to change.

  • Temporarily drag Hue and Saturation to the right to visualize what’s being targeted.

3

Expand and refine the color range

  • Adjust the color-range sliders beneath the gradient to include the entire area.

  • Widen the range and soften transitions so coverage is smooth.

  • Make sure nearby tones (like skin) are not affected.

4

Choose the new color

  • Return Hue and Saturation to 0.

  • Drag the Hue slider to pick the new color (red, pink, etc.).

  • Adjust Saturation to taste for a natural look.

5

Make it grayscale if desired

  • Reduce Saturation to -100 to remove color for a black-and-white look.

  • If other areas are affected, fine-tune the color-range sliders again.
