Blend Two Images in Photoshop (4 Methods)

In this tutorial, you’ll combine two images into a single document and blend them convincingly. You’ll learn quick ways to stack images, then explore four blending techniques: blending modes, gradient masks, subject cutouts, and Blend If sliders. Step-by-step instructions

1

Open and prepare both images

  • Go to File → Open and select your two photos.

  • Click Open to load each image in its own tab.

2

Combine the images into one document

  • Method A (Tabs): Click-drag one image into the other image’s tab, wait for the canvas to appear, hold Shift to center, and release.

  • Method B (Tiled): Go to Window → Arrange → Tile, then drag the layer from one document onto the other document’s canvas.

3

Blend using layer blending modes

  • Select the top layer in the Layers panel.

  • Open the blending mode dropdown (defaults to Normal).

  • Hover through modes to preview; choose one that fits (e.g., Hard Light for a strong, reflective mix).

  • Fine-tune opacity if needed.

4

Blend with a gradient layer mask

  • With the top layer selected, click the Add Layer Mask icon.

  • Select the Gradient Tool (G). In the Options bar, set Black to White, Linear, Mode: Normal, Opacity: 100%.

  • Drag across the image on the mask to create a smooth transition between images.

  • Adjust the gradient direction/length for different blends.

5

Cut out a subject and mask it

  • Choose the Object Selection Tool or Quick Selection Tool.

  • In the Options bar, click Select Subject to auto-select the main subject.

  • Refine by brushing adds/subtracts as needed.

  • Click Add Layer Mask to hide the background and composite the cutout over the other image.

6

Use Blend If for tonal blending

  • Double-click the top layer (not the name) to open Layer Style.

  • Under Blend If, adjust the Underlying Layer slider to reveal tones from the layer below.

  • Alt/Option-drag a slider handle to split it for a smoother, more natural transition.

  • Click OK to apply.
