Add a Realistic Grain Effect in Photoshop
A flexible grain layer adds texture and character to photos without damaging the original. This method uses a neutral gray layer as a Smart Object so you can fine‑tune grain strength, distribution, and softness at any time.

Step-by-step instructions
1
Create a neutral gray grain layer
Add a new layer above your image and name it “grain.”
Go to Edit → Fill, set Contents to 50% Gray, and click OK.
2
Convert to Smart Object for flexibility
Right‑click the grain layer → Convert to Smart Object.
3
Add noise
Go to Filter → Noise → Add Noise.
Set Amount (e.g., 15%; raise for stronger grain).
Choose Distribution: Gaussian; check Monochromatic for black‑and‑white grain if desired; click OK.
4
Blend and refine
Change the grain layer’s blending mode to Overlay (try Soft Light for subtler effect).
Optional: go to Filter → Blur → Gaussian Blur to slightly soften harsh grain.
