Outline a Photo Subject in Photoshop (Clean Stroke Border)
This walkthrough shows how to isolate a subject and add a clean outer stroke as an outline. You’ll use Select Subject or the Quick Selection Tool and then apply a Stroke in Layer Styles with precise settings. The result is a high-contrast outline that pops on any background.

Step-by-step instructions
Open your image and select the subject
Open your photo in Photoshop.
Use the Quick Selection Tool to paint over the subject, or go to Select → Subject.
Refine the selection by adding/removing areas with the tool’s add/subtract modes.
Place the subject on its own layer
Right-click inside the active selection and choose Layer Via Copy.
You now have a new layer containing only the selected subject.
Add the outline via Stroke
Right-click the subject layer and choose Blending Options.
Select Stroke in the left column.
Set Size: 15 px.
Set Position: Outside.
Finalize stroke settings and apply
Set Blend Mode: Normal and Opacity: 100%.
Set Fill Type: Color and choose White (#FFFFFF).
Click OK to apply the outline.
