Make Black Silhouettes of Any Image in Photoshop (Stencil Effect)
This quick workflow turns any photo into a crisp black silhouette with optional detail where you want it. By converting to a Smart Object first, you keep the effect fully editable. You’ll finish with a clipped Levels adjustment to fine‑tune contrast.

Step-by-step instructions
Prepare the layer as a Smart Object
Open your image.
Right‑click the layer → Convert to Smart Object to keep adjustments editable.
Reduce tones with Posterize
Go to Image → Adjustments → Posterize.
Set Levels to 7 and click OK.
Create the base silhouette with Threshold
Go to Image → Adjustments → Threshold.
Set Threshold Level to 88 and click OK.
Duplicate and refine highlights
Press Ctrl/Cmd+J to duplicate the layer.
In the duplicate, double‑click Smart Filters → Threshold and raise the Level to 176, then OK.
Add a Layer Mask to the duplicate and invert it: Select the mask and press Ctrl/Cmd+I (the duplicate is now hidden).
Paint in selective details
Select the Brush Tool (B) with a Soft Round tip, Opacity 100%, Flow 50%.
Set Foreground color to white and paint on the inverted mask to reveal lighter areas (e.g., buildings/subject).
Boost contrast with a clipped Levels adjustment
Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Levels (place above the top layer).
Clip it to the layer below: click the Clip icon in the Properties panel or Alt/Option‑click between layers.
Set Midtone (Gamma) to 2.70 and Highlight Input to 190. Adjust to taste.
