This step-by-step guide shows you how to create a clean 3D letter effect in Photoshop without 3D tools. You’ll offset duplicated text, draw side faces with the Pen Tool, clip an image or texture to the text, and add shading for depth. Finally, you’ll create a reflection and polish the design with Camera Raw Filter.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Create and size your text

  • Select the Type Tool (T) and type your text with your chosen font.

  • Press Ctrl+T (Cmd+T) to resize and position the text.

  • Press Ctrl+J (Cmd+J) to duplicate the text layer, then change the duplicate’s color.

  • Select the Move Tool (V) and nudge the duplicate to the right to create a depth offset.

2

Build the 3D side faces

  • Choose the Pen Tool (P) and draw side shapes that connect corresponding edges between the front and back text.

  • Shift-click to select all side shape layers.

  • Right-click the selection → Convert to Smart Object.

  • Click the eye icon to hide the side-faces Smart Object for now.

3

Place and clip an image or texture

  • Go to File → Place Embedded and insert your image/texture.

  • Right-click the placed layer → Flip Horizontal if needed; reduce Opacity to align; transform to fit; then restore Opacity to 100%.

  • Alt-click between the placed layer and the lower text layer to create a clipping mask.

  • Press Ctrl+J (Cmd+J) to duplicate the clipped image if you need additional coverage.

4

Clean edges with selections and masks

  • Go to Select → Subject, then click the Add Layer Mask icon on the placed image.

  • Ctrl-click (Cmd-click) the original text layer thumbnail to load its selection.

  • Go to Select → Inverse.

  • Choose the Brush Tool (B), set Foreground to black, and paint on the mask to remove unwanted areas outside the letters.

5

Shade the sides for depth

  • Show the side-faces Smart Object; Alt-drag it to duplicate and clip copies to the lower text and the side faces as needed.

  • Create a Levels adjustment layer (Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Levels), then Alt-click to clip it to the lower text layer and adjust for depth.

  • Add another clipped Levels for the side faces to fine-tune contrast and lighting.

6

Create a reflection

  • Select all related layers and press Ctrl+G (Cmd+G) to group.

  • Press Ctrl+J (Cmd+J) to duplicate the group, then right-click → Merge Group to flatten the copy.

  • Press Ctrl+T (Cmd+T), right-click → Flip Vertical, and position the flipped layer beneath the original as a reflection.

  • Alt-click the Add Layer Mask icon to add a black mask; choose the Gradient Tool (G) and drag a white-to-black gradient on the mask to fade the reflection.

7

Finish with global effects

  • Optionally add Gradient or other adjustment layers for overall color/contrast.

  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E (Cmd+Option+Shift+E) to create a merged layer on top.

  • Right-click → Convert to Smart Object.

  • Go to Filter → Camera Raw Filter and apply your preferred settings.
