Expand an image background in Photoshop with Generative Expand

Quickly center your subject by extending the canvas and letting Photoshop generate realistic background to fill the empty space. You’ll use the Crop Tool to expand the frame and Generative Expand to create seamless extensions, then review variations and choose the best result.

Step-by-step instructions

Select the Crop Tool and expand the canvas

  • Press C to select the Crop Tool.

  • Drag a side handle outward (e.g., the right edge) until your subject is centered as desired.

Enable Generative Expand and generate the fill

  • In the on‑screen Generative Expand bar, click Generative Expand.

  • Leave the prompt empty (or describe what you want) and click Generate.

  • Wait for Photoshop to synthesize the extended background.

Review and choose a variation

  • In the Properties panel, click through the generated Variations to preview options.

  • Select the version that blends best with your image.

Commit the crop

  • Press Enter/Return or click the checkmark in the options bar to finalize the expanded image.
