Distort Text to Create a Doppler Effect in Photoshop
Create a dynamic typographic poster by distorting stacked text with gradient masks. You’ll start with a CMYK poster document and a textured gradient background. Then you’ll add your headline, clip an image into the text, and duplicate masked text layers to build the Doppler-style distortion.

Step-by-step instructions
Create the poster document and guides
Go to File → New and set Size to 297 × 210 mm, Resolution 300 ppi, Color Mode CMYK; click Create.
Go to View → New Guide Layout → check Margins → set all to 1 cm; click OK.
In Layers, create two groups: Background and Foreground to stay organized.
Build the textured gradient background
Background group: Layer → New Fill Layer → Gradient.
Click the gradient swatch and set left color stop to #26169F and right color stop to #DA2E34; Angle 35°; click OK.
With the Gradient Fill layer selected, go to Filter → Stylize → Tiles → Number of Tiles: 10, Max Offset: 10%, Fill Empty Areas With: Background Color; click OK (convert to Smart Object if prompted).
Go to Filter → Blur → Motion Blur → Angle: 50°, Distance: 222; click OK.
Add Layer → New Fill Layer → Solid Color → Black; set Opacity to 30%.
Add another Gradient Fill set to Style: Radial. In the Gradient Editor, set top Opacity stop to 50% and Color stop Location to 25 for a subtle vignette.
Add headline text and clip an image inside
Switch to the Foreground group. Select the Type Tool (T) and type: Rhythm of the Night.
Set Font to Damner’s Chronicle (or similar) and Size to 115 pt; center it in the canvas.
Place your image (File → Place Embedded or drag in). Press Ctrl/Cmd+T and set Horizontal/Vertical Scale ≈ 65%; set Y position to ~1500 px to align as shown.
Right-click the image layer → Create Clipping Mask to clip it inside the text.
Create the upward Doppler streaks
Duplicate the clipped image and text layers (select both → drag to New Layer).
Select the duplicated text layer and click Add Layer Mask.
Press Ctrl/Cmd+T and nudge this duplicate slightly upward while holding Shift to keep the same X position.
Select the mask thumbnail, choose the Gradient Tool (G), and drag a black-to-white gradient from the top of the text downward to fade it. Undo and retry until the streak looks right.
Duplicate this masked text/image pair about 5 more times, moving each slightly higher. Align the topmost to the top margin (Ctrl/Cmd+T), then select all these text layers and use the Distribute Vertically button in the Options bar.
Create the downward Doppler streaks
Duplicate the original clipped image and text layers again; tag/rename for clarity.
Transform the new text copy slightly below the original baseline (Ctrl/Cmd+T).
Add a layer mask to this text and apply a black-to-white gradient from the bottom upward to fade.
Duplicate this masked pair about 5 more times and move progressively lower. Select the group of lower text layers and click Distribute Vertically to even spacing to the bottom margin.
Adjust tones and export
Optionally add Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Brightness/Contrast to fine-tune overall contrast.
Save your working file (File → Save As → Photoshop PSD).
Export for print or web: File → Export → Save for Web (Legacy) and adjust size/quality as needed.
