Step-by-step instructions

1

Crop with the Crop Tool

  • Select the Crop Tool (C).

  • Drag the handles to frame your composition.

  • Press Enter/Return or click the checkmark to apply the crop.

2

Crop to a selection (rectangle or circle)

  • Use the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) to select the area to keep, then go to Image → Crop.

  • For a perfect circle selection, use the Elliptical Marquee and hold Shift while dragging.

  • Note: Image → Crop always trims the canvas to a rectangle; use the next methods for a true circular cutout.

3

Create a circular cutout via cut-and-paste

  • Make an Elliptical Marquee selection around the subject.

  • Invert the selection via Select → Inverse (Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+I) and choose Edit → Cut (Ctrl/Cmd+X), then Edit → Paste (Ctrl/Cmd+V).

  • Delete or hide the original Background layer to keep only the circular content on transparency.

4

Non-destructive circle crop with a clipping mask

  • Draw an ellipse with the Ellipse Tool and place it below your image layer.

  • Ensure the image layer sits directly above the shape, then right-click the image layer → Create Clipping Mask.

  • Move/transform the image or the shape to reposition the crop at any time.

5

Hide areas with a layer mask

  • Select the image layer and click Add Layer Mask.

  • Create a selection of the area to keep, then go to Select → Inverse (Shift+Ctrl/Cmd+I).

  • Fill with black via Edit → Fill (Shift+F5) → Contents: Black → OK to hide the outside.

  • Clear the selection via Select → Deselect (Ctrl/Cmd+D).

6

Batch-crop multiple files using an Action

  • Install the .atn action by opening it, then open Window → Actions (Alt+F9) to locate it.

  • Go to File → Automate → Batch, choose your crop action (e.g., Crop Image Set → Decrease Shape Circle Crop).

  • Set Source to your images folder and Destination to an output folder; check Suppress File Open Options Dialogs and click OK.

  • Review the processed files in your destination folder.

7

Crop an animated GIF

  • Open the GIF and choose Window → Timeline to display frames.

  • Use any crop method (e.g., Crop Tool) to trim; all frames will be cropped together.

  • Export your updated animation as needed.
