Change Any Colour in Photoshop Using Hue/Saturation

Use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer to retint any specific colour in seconds. You’ll sample the colour with the on-image Hand tool, expand the selection range for full coverage, and then set the exact hue and saturation you want. This approach is precise and fully editable.

Step-by-step instructions

1

Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer

  • Go to Layer → New Adjustment Layer → Hue/Saturation.

  • In Properties, click the Hand tool icon.

2

Sample the target colour

  • Click directly on the item whose colour you want to change.

  • Temporarily push Hue and Saturation to the right to see what’s being selected.

3

Broaden and smooth the range

  • Adjust the sliders beneath the gradient to include all of the target area.

  • Soften transitions and ensure skin or other nearby tones aren’t affected.

  • Refine until coverage looks clean.

4

Set the new colour

  • Return Hue and Saturation to 0.

  • Drag Hue to choose a new colour; tweak Saturation to taste.

  • Stop when the colour looks natural and consistent.

5

Create a monochrome look (optional)

  • Lower Saturation to -100 for a black-and-white/grayscale version.

  • If spill occurs, refine the colour range sliders to isolate the subject.
